Kaffarah

Kaffarah is a mandatory compensation for breaking an oath or intentionally breaking a fast during Ramadan without a valid reason (e.g., health issues, illness or traveling).

• For breaking a fast intentionally, One must either fast for 60 consecutive days or feed 60 poor people, twice a day.

The estimated cost to feed one person twice a day is $12 per day, making the total Kaffarah $720 per missed day ($12 x 60).

• For breaking an oath: One must either fast for three consecutive days or feed 10 people, with a total cost of $120 ($12 x 10).

What is the difference between Fidya and Kaffarah?
• Fidya or Fedyah is paid as compensation for missed fasts that cannot be made up due to a valid Islamic excuse, such as chronic illness or old age.

• Kaffarah is required for intentionally breaking a fast during Ramadan or breaking an oath. The compensation amount varies depending on the type of violation.
